Should private drugs be available on the NHS?

The SoR is asking TopTalk readers to guide its response to a review of the NHS's private drugs policy.

Professor Mike Richards, National Clinical Director, is leading the government review, looking at whether it is acceptable for people to top up NHS care by paying privately for drugs not routinely available on the NHS.

Under current practice, people who wish to pay for a drug in this way are then usually expected to pay for the whole of their treatment privately.

Said Charlotte Beardmore, SoR professional officer for radiotherapy: "We would like to give TopTalk readers the opportunity to contribute to the evidence we are producing in response to the government. We think it’s a very important social question, so all views would be helpful to ensure our response reflects the reality for departments."

Visit the DH website to read details of the review.

Comments should be emailed to SoR Professional Officer Charlotte Beardmore, SoR Professional Officer and copied in to Kate Garas by 22 August 2008.
