News Issue No.85

Society to consult over pensions deal

The Society's Council has discussed the proposed public sector pensions Heads of Agreement and it is clear that the final details have yet to be released. Once these are available, UK Council has agreed that members should have the final say as to whether the revised deal is accepted or rejected.

"When we have all the details about what the negotiations have produced since the Day of Action, we will inform the members about what the implications are for accepting or rejecting the offer," said Sue Johnson, the Society's President.

"Once they have had the information, we shall be asking members what they want to do next," she continued.

The Heads of Agreement are due to be published late January or early February. The Society's UK Council will next meet on 8 February and then will put the issue out to the members for them to consider.

"There has been progress in the negotiations but Society members will have to decide whether they've gone far enough, or whether the government's concessions are not sufficient to stop members deciding to take further action to follow on from the national strike which took place on 30 November," Sue said.

"We cannot ask members to decide until they have all the facts and the implications of any decision."

The SoR Council was briefed by the Society's director of industrial relations, Warren Town, who reminded Council members that the dispute is not "just a fight over pensions in the NHS but all of the public sector. This a fight about the future of public services."

More information will be posted on www.sor.org as it becomes available.
