The Department of Health has launched a consultation on recent research into using CT to scan the 'worried well'.
Reporting in February 2008 the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (Comare) said private clinics should stop offering asymptomatic patients whole body CT scans.
Comare’s 12th report: The impact of personally initiated x-ray computed tomography scanning for the health assessment of asymptomatic individuals says there is little evidence to justify body scanning the ‘worried well’.
The report also states that potential benefits of earlier diagnosis and treatment do not outweigh the potential risk of a significant radiation dose.
The DH consultation on Comare's findings will run until 9 September.
Managers and their staff are encouraged to join the SoR's response by emailing professional officer Maria Murray by 19 August 2008.
