HPC to amend standards of proficiency

The Health Professions Council (HPC) is consulting on a suggested amendment to a profession-specific standard in the standards of proficiency for radiographers.

Following responses received by the HPC during its consultation held in 2007/2008, the following profession-specific standard was added for diagnostic radiographers: “To be able to assist with ultrasound imaging procedures and perform standard first trimester ultrasound measurements.”

The HPC has since received feedback which suggests that the second part of this standard (‘be able to...perform standard first trimester ultrasound measurements’) is not necessary at this time for threshold safe and effective practice as a diagnostic radiographer.

The amended standard, if agreed, would read: “be able to assist with ultrasound imaging procedures.”

The HPC invites responses from radiographers and is interested in hearing views on whether the standard as it currently reads is necessary for safe and effective practice as a diagnostic radiographer.

The Society fully supports the amendment.
