Room for improvement?

The SoR has welcomed a document which sets out the characteristics that define an effective multidisciplinary team.

Produced by the National Cancer Action team (NCAT), the document is based on the responses of over 2000 MDT members to a 2009 survey about MDT working.

The characteristics of an MDT fall into a number of categories including the team, infrastructure for meetings, meeting organisation and logistics, patient-centred clinical decision making and team governance.

MDT members are advised to look at the characteristics and see how their own team compares, as well as initiate discussions within their MDT and trust about what actions might need to be taken.

“We would recommend that all members of the profession working with cancer patients take time to read this guidance as it provides information which will help improve the functioning of MDTs,” said SoR professional officer, Charlotte Beardmore.

“We also recognise the particular value it has to the growing numbers of our profession who are advanced  and consultant practitioners and who directly contribute to the work of the cancer MDTs.”

In related news, the SoR has been asked to nominate a radiographer to sit on the MDT Development Steering Group which is chaired by National Cancer Director Professor Mike Richards.
