A DVD has been launched to promote the work of forensic radiographers, particularly in connection with disaster victim identification.
The DVD has been produced by the International Association of Forensic Radiographers and focuses on the importance of radiography in the case of disasters or emergencies which cause mass fatalities.
Radiographers played a huge role in the aftermath of the 7/7 disaster, which took place in London in July 2005. The sheer magnitude of this terrorist attack put London’s mortuaries under huge pressure, and the DVD explores how radiographers were suddenly forced to take their skills from an ordinary NHS setting to an extraordinary forensic one.
Volunteers from the all across the UK’s radiography workforce joined the Radiography Response Team, giving their time to help coroners and pathologists identify bodies in an emergency mortuary.
As well as raising awareness of this specialist branch of radiography, the IAFR hopes the DVD will assist in its continued campaign to achieve protected release for forensic team members in the case of a mass fatality incident.
It also hopes to promote continued recruitment, training and preparing radiographers to deal with any future mass emergency situations.
