Following the publication of the health secretary’s pre budget report, the Society is urging radiographers to make a case for the services they provide.
NHS 2010 - 2015: from good to great introduces a five-year plan to reshape the NHS to deliver high quality health care in a tough financial environment.
The plan outlines a growth of more than 5% in funding until 2011, but then no further increase in real terms for three years, during which time the service will be expected to continue to grow.
‘The message – already outlined by David Nicholson, the NHS CEO, is that AHPs have a unique opportunity to do what we do best: providing excellent high quality clinical services at low cost’, states Society CEO Richard Evans.
But with departments already struggling to meet annual savings targets and many trusts cutting back heavily, despite increased funding, the future looks bleak.
‘The answer is to take the initiative and make the case for our services, not only what we know we do well but also the impact that good timely diagnostics and high quality radiotherapy has on wider financial management,' says Richard.
'Our specialities will still be here after the recession but how we weather the storm in the meantime is up to us’.
