Improving outcomes

The Society has welcomed a report published by a sub-group of the National Imaging Board concerning the use of interventional radiology (IR).

The report, Improving quality and outcomes for patients suggests and describes how IR services can help the NHS to improve quality, safety and productivity via these minimally invasive procedures, while delivering comparable or better outcomes for patients with shorter hospital stays and fewer major complications.

Compiled by interventional radiologists, nurses, radiographers, a patient representative and members of the Department of Health and National Imaging Board (England), the report aims to inform and stimulate discussion about how IR services can support the QIPP (quality, innovation, productivity and prevention) agenda.

According to Dr Erika Denton, national clinical lead for diagnostic imaging, and chair of the National Imaging Board: “The Imaging Programme's focus has been on reducing waiting times for imaging services in line with the 18 weeks target. The focus is now on sustaining these low waits; along with addressing wider diagnostic imaging issues to improve the quality of services and enhance the patient experience.”

Following its publication, Audrey Paterson, the SoR’s director of professional policy, said of the report: “The Society welcomes this report. It is very important that interventional radiology services continue to be developed to support patients needs and the quality of care and outcomes.

"Obviously, this will put considerable pressure on imaging services, so the Society looks forward to seeing these services being supported with the continued growth of radiography advanced practice, as part of the four-tier structure.”
