Clubcard challenge

Tesco plc has responded to a letter from the Society which questioned the retailer’s decision to offer CT scans through its Clubcard voucher scheme.

The Society’s CEO Richard Evans wrote to Tesco chief Terry Leahy in May after members of the Society expressed their concerns about the Clubcard promotion.

In his letter, Richard pointed out that CT scanning is “a technique involving the use of ionising radiation (x-rays) and that examinations carry their own inherent health risk."

Nick McCormack, head of business development at Tesco Freetime, defended the supermarket giant’s position, explaining: “Tesco has worked with Lifescan for a number of years through our staff executive benefits programme and they have demonstrated to us that they operate in accordance with best practice.”

Mr McCormack went on to say that he is confident that Tesco customers are provided with full information about the benefits and risks associated with CT scans.

The issue received a further airing on Radio 5 Live’s and Radio Wales’ breakfast programmes. In a broadcast interview, Richard Evans reiterated the SoR’s concerns and said he hoped Tesco would review its position in light of the additional publicity.
