The jury's out

The SoR is looking for experienced radiographers and sonographers who would be willing to offer their services as an expert witness.

"Although they may be asked to appear in court, expert witnesses are just as likely to be asked to write a report, and may be asked to give evidence in a number of fora including tribunals and mediation," explained SoR professional officer, Kate Garas.

"They need to be able to give an objective and unbiased opinion and present their evidence in a clear and coherent way. They need to be up to date in their field of expertise as they are being called because of their qualifications and expertise. However, they  need to be open minded and confident in their abilities, but not judgemental."

Due to the diversity of the skills of the radiographic workforce, the SoR would like to hear from suitably qualified and experienced radiographers and sonographers. Recruits are needed from all areas of practice, be it plain film imaging and reporting, mammography. CT,  MRI, ultrasound or radiotherapy. Once the SoR has a suitable group it will arrange  training from a specialist legal firm regarding what to expect, how to write legal reports and deal with the challenges of appearing as an expert witness at an inquest or court hearing.

Expressions of interest should be sent to Nigel Thomson or Kate Garas.
