Buyers' advice for stroke imaging services

Is your department replacing or upgrading its stroke imaging equipment? New independent guidance is available to help you in your decision.

The NHS PASA Centre for Evidence-based Purchasing (CEP) has published the following reports on neuro-imaging software packages, all of which are freely available to download from the CEP website:

• Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and competing imaging technologies for the diagnosis of stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA)

• CT perfusion imaging in the management of stroke and TIA

• CT perfusion imaging in the management of stroke and TIA

• Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging

• Buyers’ guides: a range of guides to multislice CT systems and clinical applications software

CEP is funded by the Department of Health to provide free, independent and evidence-based information about medical technologies for healthcare providers and service commissioners.

This can be used to underpin purchasing decisions and drive adoption of useful, innovative healthcare technologies in the NHS.

Helen Cole is business development manager for imaging at CEP, she said: “Improving access to stroke services, including the 24 hours a day, 7 days a week availability of imaging for suspected stroke and TIA, became a key driver for change in the NHS last year.

"CEP has responded to the national stroke diagnosis initiatives, realising that the sudden influx of new guidance for stroke imaging services needed analysing and collating into more manageable sources to help business case development and cost-effective procurement of new CT and MRI technologies."
