A new report from the SoR offers guidance on radiation protection for all professionals delivering radiotherapy including chief executives, medical directors and human resources departments.
A Guide to Understanding the Implications of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations in Radiotherapy is a joint report, published by the SoR, The Royal College of Radiologists and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.
Maria Murray, SoR professional officer for radiation protection (UK), said although the guide is intended to be read in conjunction with IR(ME)R and published guidance, it offers a fantastic overview to all: "This is an excellent, jointly authored publication from the relevant experts for IR(ME)R and is the definitive IR(ME)R guide for the radiotherapy community.
“This long-awaited guide is easy to read and understand, and therapeutic radiographers are strongly advised to make themselves familiar with the content – it is their professional and legal responsibility to be up-to-date on IR(ME)R issues."
Although written for the RT community, Maria suggests the guide is also very useful for diagnostic radiographers as it touches upon some "general yet significant IR(ME)R-related issues.”
