New guidance on NHS priorities

The Department of Health has published new guidance for NHS managers on planning and managing services to deliver against national priorities.

Last year, NHS Operating Framework the Vital Signs was published to introduce a new approach to planning and managing priorities both nationally and locally.

New guidance explains how organisations can use the framework to develop local operational plans, deliver against national priorities and select and create local priorities.

The document sets out how performance will be managed against each of the three tiers of the Vital Signs, limiting central performance management to the tier one national priorities and beyond that only to those areas or organisations where performance is weak.

SoR professional officer, Charlotte Beardmore, said: "This document sets out the approach for handling national and local priorities for the NHS in England. I was interested to see that a large proportion of the national requirements relate to the work of radiographers, such as the commitment to radiotherapy treatment waiting times."
