Choice of scan

National clinical lead for diagnostic imaging, Erika Denton, has said that the Choice of Scan programme, due to go live on 30 November, is a welcome opportunity to raise the profile of imaging in individual trusts.

Coming at the time when local delivery plans are being formulated, service managers and clinical directors should look for the chance to put forward their proposals for service improvement and waiting time reduction. This should not only be in CT and MRI, but right across all modalities because Choice of Scan will be extended next year.

If waits for CT and/or MRI scans exceed 26 weeks, patients must be offered the choice of having the examination at another hospital. This will be at the expense of the ‘home’ trust. After years of having operational and development plans shelved, or just plain ignored, Choice of Scan may force trust management boards to sit up and listen.

Please send your views about Choice of Scan to the SoR’s chief executive, Richard Evans, at richarde@sor.org
