Cancer services spending ‘at record levels’
£639 million has been invested in cancer services since 2000/01, £69 million more than was committed in the NHS Cancer Plan. A breakdown of figures shows:
-
£192 million was spent on cancer drugs and £230 million on other services, such as specialist staff;
-
£113 million was invested in new equipment and;
-
£103 million went towards staff training, modernising services and palliative care.
Professor Mike Richards, national director for cancer, undertook the tracking exercise.“These figures show that the money being allocated to cancer services is making a real difference, with more drugs, staff and equipment being provided,” he said.
However, Macmillan Cancer Relief say that despite the recent figures, there is still a lot of work to be done. Peter Cardy, chief executive, said: “Macmillan will keep up the pressure on the Department of Health because this tracking exercise happened for one reason: charities and MPs asked why cancer money wasn't getting spent where it's meant.”
