PACS programme steps up pace

All NHS trusts in England should soon be enjoying the benefits of PACS, as the final arrangements for the national programme are agreed. NHS Connecting for Health has signed a £235m contract with supplier Accenture to provide Agfa PACS to the north and north-eastern regions. This means that all five English regions have agreements in place.

The £6bn programme has already delivered PACS to four NHS trusts – Hillingdon Hospital NHS Trust, West Dorset Hospitals NHS Trust, Mayday Hospital Trust and Salisbury Healthcare NHS Trust – and nearly 150,000 digital images are being stored.

Richard Granger, director general of NHS IT, said: “We have completed the contractual jigsaw and I look forward to driving implementation so that PACS becomes ubiquitous in English hospitals and the benefits are made real.”
