Vacancy rates down
The Department of Health's statistics for the number of vacant radiography positions in England show a fall over the past year. The national average for therapeutic radiographers is 6% and diagnostic radiography 3.4%. These compare with 8.8% and 4.8% a year ago.
Therapy still has the highest vacancy rate amongst all the allied health professions and diagnostic comes third after occupational therapists at 3.9%.
Scotland mirrors England with similar drops in the number of vacant radiography positions. Just over 5% of radiography posts were vacant for three months or longer over the past 12 months, compared with 7.5% in the previous period. Sonography vacancies are down 0.4%.
However, as south of the border, there is a large discrepancy between diagnostic and therapeutic posts. Across all of Scotland, almost 9% of therapy jobs were vacant for three months or longer, compared with 2.7% of diagnostic positions.
