The end is nigh?
An article in The Financial Times suggests an uncertain future for district general hospitals. The article highlights a recent speech made by Bob Ricketts, head of capacity planning at the DoH, in which he described “an increasing threat to the viability of the district general hospital model, and traditional secondary care services.”
According to the article, increasing amounts of non-emergency surgery are set to be moved out to free-standing treatment centres, some run by the private sector. More care for chronic conditions is to be shifted out of hospital to family doctor-based services and more diagnostic facilities are to be provided in primary care rather than hospital.
