IR partnerships and working time regulations
Partnerships in industrial relations and the working time regulations are the subjects of a special one day course for managers being run by the Society’s Yorkshire & North Trent Region (open to managers nationwide).
Presenter 1: Miguel Martinez, Professor of Industrial Relations at Bradford University School of Management, who will be looking at the concept of partnership in industrial relations and what obligations and benefits this has for managers who deal with industrial relations representatives.
The pressures of public sector organisations are increasing in terms of finances and in terms of the need to involve staff on matters of change. There is increasing interest in the question of partnership and employee involvement within various policy circles. Employees and trade unions can enhance performance and contribute to a better workplace environment as well. But what does partnership mean?
What does it entail in terms of the day to day business of the NHS? What kinds of requirements does it bring? And what are the concerns of embarking on such a commitment?
The session will look at the broad question of involvement and partnership but it will also focus on examples of good practice within the NHS: up to date research based cases will be used that have been developed by the presenters with the help of ACAS. These will show the ways in which new forms of consultation have emerged and been developed. They are up to date and informed by close study of a range of NHS workplaces. The session also draws on nearly 10 years of research.
Presenter 2: Andrew James of Thompsons Solicitors, who will look at the working time regulations and how they affect the running of radiology departments. He will also look at current case law, the intricacies of the regulations and how this fits with service delivery needs.
