New assessment of health services
A new system for assessing health services in England will see routine inspections of NHS trusts replaced with inspections only where there is evidence of a problem.
Developed by the Healthcare Commission, the system puts an end to star ratings, and will require trusts to publish declarations of their performance and introduce improvement reviews focusing on priority areas. Patient groups will also be offered a role in judging the quality of national health services. One of the aims of the risk-based regulation is to deliver more improvement and less red tape.
