Radiology services under the spotlight

X-ray imageA new study of radiology services in acute hospital settings is being undertaken by the Healthcare Commission. It aims to update the Audit Commission’s 2002 assessment, in which benchmark data was used to compare performance in similar sized departments. A national report was produced (click here to view).

Richard Evans, CEO of the SoR, was a radiology services manager at the time of the initial study. “The data collection to support the study was inevitably time consuming and the process to ensure the interpretation of the data by Audit Commission staff was accurate and representative was, at times, frustrating,” he said. “Nevertheless, the resulting survey data proved useful to many managers in highlighting the issues affecting their services and in informing plans and bids.”

The new study’s data collection period will be between the end of August and November 2005. All services based in acute settings in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be included and acute hospital chief executives should be receiving a letter shortly.

The Healthcare Commission is consulting the RCR and SoR over the design of the data collection questionnaire. Richard Evans commented: “We hope to be able positively to influence the design of this important study so that the results accurately portray the issues facing departments throughout the countries.”
