Role of the independent sector to double

Hospital photoThe SoR has voiced concern over the new Secretary of State for Health’s plans to double the independent sector’s role in NHS care.

Patricia Hewitt’s plans include a second wave of independent treatment centres, as well as the bulk purchase of a further 250,000 operations a year from independent providers. This will be in addition to the 215,000 operations a year contracted by her predecessor John Reid.

She has also pledged to push forward with the patient choice agenda, an initiative that aims to offer people the option of picking from a range of hospitals and treatment centres to receive their care, including private providers. She signalled that NHS hospitals face the possibility of closure if they fail to attract sufficient numbers of patients.

The initiatives aim to help the health service meet the 2008 target of 18 weeks from referral to treatment.

Richard Evans, the Society’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “Given the real pressures on diagnostic imaging services, it is not surprising that Patricia Hewitt is announcing more private sector initiatives. However, it is disappointing that she has made no mention of NHS provided services or acknowledged the importance of these services.

“We are seeking an early meeting with Ms Hewitt and her team to discuss all of the issues facing radiographers including Agenda for Change and independent sector provision.”
