“We are all on the same side…?”
At a meeting of the South East Region Managers and Academics Group (SERMAG), Richard Evans and Marie Bullough from SoR led a discussion on the rights of managers as members. The dialogue also covered managers and accredited representatives working together, as well as when the roles demand opposing views, such as in disciplinary or grievance hearings.
Although managers may find that the SoR is supporting or advising members of staff in disciplinaries or grievances, this does not reduce the manager’s own rights as a member. SoR are looking at developing advice for managers caught up in formal procedures so that all can be clear about the likely processes, the roles that are played out, and the expectations that are placed on manager and staff member alike.
Richard Evans commented that it is clear that managers in many hospitals do not get the levels of advice and support from HR departments that used to be the norm. He went on to say that, ideally, accredited representatives and managers should be able to work together to ensure that management/staff relations are favourable in departments, to the benefit of all (and in particular in promotion of excellent patient services).
When conflicts arise, professionals should be able to support the necessary process from both sides and then be able to return to the business of providing patient services.
