Wales announces bursary increase
All new and existing radiography students in Wales will receive an additional 2.33 per cent to the NHS bursary from 1 September.
The change is in line with the uplift for students in England already agreed by the Department of Health. It follows a joint review in England and Wales prompted by the introduction of the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations UK wide.
Other changes to student entitlements include:
-
The introduction of a parents’ learning allowance by the extension of the single parent allowance to all new students who have dependent children;
-
A change to the dependants’ allowance by removal of the age related element for new students;
-
A change in the definition of independent students for new students;
-
Increases in the level of income a new student’s spouse, partner or civil partner can earn before it affects the NHS bursary and other allowances;
-
The formalisation of maternity arrangements where NHS funded students, in receipt of a NHS bursary, can continue to receive their payments throughout an authorised period of maternity absence.
The existing NHS bursary allowances that are calculated or awarded on the basis of age will be removed and from 1st September 2007, new students entering NHS funded health professional courses at Welsh universities will have their NHS bursary and other allowances calculated using new rules. There will be no change to existing students’ entitlements.
Under the legislation, ‘new’ students are those who start courses from 1 September 2007 onwards, while ‘existing’ students are those who begin courses on or before 31 August 2007.
