Professional bodies launch campaign for protected study timetabling

Managers working at the computersEmployers should guarantee a minimum of six days per year protected study time for staff, say health and social care professional bodies.

The recommendation comes from a joint statement issued by a range of allied health bodies, including the SoR, as well as nursing and midwifery organisations.

The document is part of a joint national campaign to be launched in the summer to influence health and social care employers and policy makers, and support workplace representatives.

Partner organisations hope the campaign will raise recognition of the importance of CPD in the development of all health and social care practitioners, and in the enhancement of quality patient care.

The College of Radiographers' CPD officer, Sean Kelly, commented: “This is a real step forward in that employers will be faced with a coordinated demand from grass roots staff, supported by activism at national level. The Society will issue guidance for managers, clinical staff and reps in due course.”

He added: “The six days protected study time should be the minimum time granted for practitioners' CPD. Employers will need to ensure appropriate staffing to maintain standards of care and service delivery when the time is taken, and will be encouraged to go beyond the minimum requirements where appropriate to ensure individual learning needs are met.”
