IHM calls for more training
The Institute of Healthcare Management says managers need better training, more rigorous checks and are being held back by limited opportunities to develop their skills.
Speaking at the Commons health select committee workforce planning inquiry IHM chief executive Sue Hodgetts said: “There needs to be more continuous assessment for management. We can’t assume that, if people hit a target, they’re good managers.”
She said policy shifts have created a need for new private sector skills such as negotiation, contract management and responsiveness to rapid changes in direction.
“There’s a graduate management scheme but no systematic central training for existing managers,” she said. “Some people have fantastic opportunities but others are limited by a lack of support and training.”
This view was backed up the ScoR’s CPD officer, Sean Kelly: “Discussions about CPD provision in clinical departments invariably focus on the needs of clinical staff, whilst the development and training needs of managers are often completely overlooked.
“Our on-line portfolio system ‘CPD Now’ recognizes the importance of good management and clinical leadership skills and these are incorporated into the system. However, as for all practitioners, this must be supported by the provision of protected study time and appropriate access to education and training resources appropriate to managers' specific needs.”
