Ultrasound registration scheme

Patient lying in bed with woman on machineSoR members are invited to join a voluntary register that is being set up to strengthen the case for the regulation of ultrasound practitioners by the Health Professions Council under the title 'Sonographer'.

The project leads - the SoR and the UK Association of Sonographers (UKAS) - hope to have a pilot scheme running by January 2007 with a live register launched the following year.

"We would like to encourage radiographers and other who practice ultrasound to register an early interest," said Rosemary Lee from UKAS. "This will help us to smooth out the process in the future."

After talks with the Department of Health it became clear that ultrasound regulation was not a priority and would not be centrally supported. Consequently, no application was submitted. The SoR and UKAS regard this as a grave error and will continue to pursue a protection of the title ‘sonographer’ by the HPC.

In the meantime, a voluntary register goes some way to establishing a means for members of the public, commissioners and providers of imaging services to be assured that practitioners performing ultrasound have appropriate levels of training and competence.

For further information on the voluntary register, please contact Rita Phillips or visit the SoR and UKAS stands at the BMUS conference in December.
