Why do AHPs stay, leave or return to the NHS?

Computer keyboardRadiographers should have as much scope as possible to exercise professional judgment and autonomy in their work, according to a new report on the recruitment, retention and return of Allied Health Professionals.

The work was commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) to investigate why AHPs stay, leave or return to the NHS. Researchers from Loughborough University made several recommendations for the DH following the research amongst AHPS:

  • Continue with attempts to devise career paths that make it possible to be promoted to senior positions whilst still retaining patient contact;

  • Keep in touch with AHPs who leave the NHS to become home-makers;

  • Sustain and develop efforts to make NHS work as flexible as possible.

Christina Freeman, SoR professional support officer, said: “The SCoR hopes to join the researchers in organising a presentation session with the DH to pursue some of the issues raised in the report.

“Meanwhile, the conclusions and recommendations concerning returners will be considered at the next meeting of the SoR Returners Support Network and the Sharing Resources section on our website will be promoted and expanded to take account of some of the findings.”
