Supplementary prescribing
Supplementary prescribing will be extended to include radiographers, subject to parliamentary approval.
Supplementary prescribing is undertaken in partnership with an independent prescriber (a doctor or a dentist), from an agreed patient-specific clinical management plan (CMP).
The Health Professions Council (HPC) will approve AHP supplementary prescribing programmes. HPC would like to hear from any education providers that are planning AHP supplementary prescribing programmes as early as possible in the planning process so they can begin to plan approvals visits.
Radiographers who have successfully completed an approved supplementary prescribing programme will have their entry on the HPC register annotated to indicate they are a supplementary prescriber.
The first step is to identify potential for AHP supplementary prescribing to improve the patient experience. One example relevant to radiography is prescribing for treatment-related toxicity such as skin reactions. There are resources available to help practitioners and managers.
