Waiting times for radiotherapy in Wales are longer

Radiographer using machineWaiting times for radiotherapy in Wales are longer than anywhere else in the UK because of inadequate linear accelerator and workforce provision, says a new report.

'Radiotherapy Equipment Needs and Workforce Implications 2006- 2016' examines the provision of radiotherapy in Wales in comparison to other developed countries, assesses the importance of this treatment for cancer patients and the reasons for the increasing demand.

It recommends that Wales should aims to provide 58,000 fractions of radiotherapy per million population by 2016. To achieve this, between six and 10 new additional linear accelerators will be needed, depending on the service model adopted, with each providing at least 8000 fractions per year by 2016.

The information is available in 'Radiotherapy Equipment Needs and Workforce Implications 2006 - 2016' PDF
