Government should come clean on health privatisation
A student radiographer pleaded with the government to tell the truth about whether the National Health Service is to be put into private hands.
Speaking at the TUC Congress in Brighton, Gemma Richardson-Williams, a student rep on UK Council, said that if the development of private services continues then the NHS will be no more than a logo for a group of corporate chains.
In her final year at Salford University, Gemma accused the government of spending money that should be spent on frontline care to line the pockets of private company shareholders.
“What good is an NHS when my patients are seen as commodities and come second to profits? Why are we encouraging free enterprise when there is no evidence that this will improve services or cut costs?” she asked.
“The government must make clear its intentions. If it wants to privatise so be it. At least we then know were we stand. What we cannot allow to continue is privatisation under the guise of reform. We need to call a halt to this folly and establish a progressive, open and honest dialogue about the future direction of the NHS.”
