Scottish Executive reports on CPD priorities
The SoR has welcomed a new report by the Scottish Executive which highlights the learning CPD priorities for AHPs in Scotland.
'Continued Professional Development and the Allied Health Professions in Scotland - A National Learning Needs Analysis' provides a snapshot of information from all 15 Scottish health boards to identify local CPD priorities, according to those coordinating AHP education and individual practitioners accessing it. The report also gives a picture of national CPD issues for AHPs in Scotland.
SoR CPD officer, Sean Kelly, said: “This is a welcome piece of work. It covers key questions from different regions and shows that most stakeholders are in agreement about the development needs for AHPs. The issues aren’t unique to Scotland and there is relevant information in there for any service manager throughout the UK.”
He explained: “One of the most important things to come out of it is that a number of regions say there should be protected study time for radiographers in Scotland.
“This backs up the SoR’s belief that protected study time for radiographers should be a proirity in order to support learning, and that employers need to build in worforce capacity to ensure staff have time for CPD.”
Maria Murray, SoR professional officer Scotland, added: “Perceived CPD development needs of AHPs which feature highly in the report are the acquisition of skills around leadership, research and development, policy awareness and role development. These are all skills that have been included in the leadership courses available for AHPs from the Scottish Executive - it would be sensible for radiographers to take advantage of these courses. It must be stressed though that the highest priority for radiographers for CPD opportunities is in the ongoing development of specialist clinical skills.”
