SoR issues updates on radiotherapy matters

A scannerThe SoR has issued an update on radiotherapy-related issues, including the dates for the next radiotherapy conference, scheduled for 2-4 February in Brighton.

“We have been delighted with overwhelmingly positive response to the proposed re-launch of this important event,” said Charlotte Beardmore, professional officer. “ We look forward to seeing as many radiographers as possible.”

Further news includes:

  • In England, the National Radiotherapy Advisory Group (NRAG) is finalising recommendations, which are due to be presented to Professor Mike Richards on Friday 15 September.

  • A group has been established by the Welsh Assembly to determine cancer services for the people of Wales. Maureen Noonan, RT manager, Swansea, is representing the SCoR on the group, which met for the first time in early July.

  • The SoR RAG will meet again in September. Michael Graveling, SoR Vice-President will take over as Chair. Thanks to Sue Griffiths and Kate Firkins for all their work in their respective roles as vice Chair and Chair during 2005/6.

  • NICE guidelines for spinal cord compression. Despite the initial omission of therapeutic radiographers from the NICE group, the SoR has secured a place for a therapeutic radiographer to join the group. Nicky Cornelius and Steven Dann have been nominated. Work is due to commence shortly.

  • Three multidisciplinary working parties, SCoR/RCR/IPEM, have been established.

  • UK Radiotherapy Guidance IR(ME)R. SoR representatives Maria Murray and Michael Graveling will work with the HPA to generate model procedures.

  • UK guidance incidents and near misses within radiotherapy. There is presently no mechanism to report incidents and near misses formally to the whole radiotherapy community and share knowledge and learning which might prevent a repetition. A working party aims to develop guidance around ways that this could be improved. Michael Graveling and Geri Briggs, QA Manager Royal Berkshire represent the SoR.

  • Working party regarding radiotherapy planning: target volume delineation. Sue Simpson, head of computer planning at Clatterbridge, sits on this group, the purpose of which is to make recommendations on the optimal use of image fusion and skills mix in radiotherapy planning.

  • The Academy of Royal Colleges has established an intercollegiate committee on cancer. Two radiographers have been invited to join this committee, which meets for the first time in the autumn. Kate Love will represent therapeutic radiography and Erica Scurr, diagnostic radiography.
