BBC answers Society and members’ complaints

Member of the Holby City castA letter has answered the SoR and members’ concerns about a recent edition of the BBC1 drama Holby City, from the BBC. However, it adds to the confusion rather than clear up whether the Beeb sees factual accuracy as being the first priority, or if dramatic license takes precedence.

In response to the letter from the Society’s CEO, Richard Evans, pointing out a number of factual errors in the episode of the programme broadcast on 6 June, Jacqui Macdonald of BBC Information said: “The primary functions of all our drama programmes, regardless of subject matter or style, are to entertain, enlighten, and challenge our view of the world in which we live. Dramas set in hospitals are not documentaries but are based on the observations of professionals. Yet, the incidents portrayed in the programmes mirror real-life experiences and have been applauded by many health professionals.

“Hospital dramas do not attempt to undermine medical professionals, who are highly motivated and dedicated individuals. Within any organisation however there are always problems, and doctors and nurses are subject to the same human failings as anyone else. Staff are portrayed as competent individuals treating their patients with care, compassion and respect.”

“Holby City takes the greatest care in ensuring its medical accuracy is absolutely correct. The production team work closely with advisors and experts who have had a great deal of experience in a particular area.”

Richard Evans admits to being confused by Ms Macdonald’s response. “On the one hand she is saying that dramas are not documentaries and the priority is to entertain, then Ms Macdonald states that medical accuracy is paramount. And it obviously wasn’t, which is what my letter pointed out.”
