$95,000 fellowship funding

LogoThe Commonwealth Fund is inviting applicants for the 2007-2008 Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy. Successful applicants from the UK, Australia, Germany and New Zealand spend up to 12 months in the United States doing a policy-oriented research study, working with health policy experts, and gaining an in-depth knowledge of other countries’ health care systems.

Applicants must “demonstrate a strong interest in health policy issues and propose a study that falls within the scope of The Commonwealth Fund’s principal areas of focus: health care system performance, including access to care, insurance coverage, efficiency, and equity; quality improvement; quality of care for children, the elderly, and minorities; and patient-centred primary care.”

A peer-reviewed journal article or policy report is the anticipated product of the fellowship. Past Harkness Fellows have published their project findings in leading UK and US journals.

Each fellowship will provide up to $95,000 in support, which includes round trip airfare to the USA, a monthly stipend, seminars and policy briefings, project-related travel and other research expenses, health insurance, and US taxes. The Foundation will provide replacement staff costs to the UK employer on the understanding that they, in turn, will continue to pay full salary and benefits to the fellow for the duration of the fellowship. In addition, a supplemental allowance is provided to fellows accompanied by a spouse and/or children. The deadline for applications is 1 September 2006.

Go to the Commonwealth Fund and the Harkness Fellowships website for more details, including a list of suggested projects.
