Doing the right thing
Managers are generally perceived by their staff to be supportive, according to the results of the annual NHS survey PDF. And when the level of support from managers is good, staff retention is high and absenteeism is low.
As part of the Healthcare Commission's 2005 survey, staff were asked a series of questions to assess the extent to which they felt their immediate managers provided them with support, guidance and feedback on their work, and took into account their opinions before making decisions that affected them.
The average score was 3.49, compared with scores of 3.52 in 2004 and 3.47 in 2003.
Staff were questioned on a range of topics including the extent of positive feeling within organisations, the level of training opportunities and whistle blowing policies.
