2.5% pay increase

Hand holding bank notesThe Society has given a cautious welcome to the government’s decision to honour the Pay Review Body’s recommendations to give radiographers an increase of 2.5 per cent from 1 April for the coming year, slightly ahead of the rate of inflation.

The PRB does not deal with the now defunct Whitley Council scales. However, there are many members yet to be assimilated and even more whose ‘out of hours’ work is paid relative to the old rates.

With respect to those members who have yet to be assimilated and may not be until later in the year, the Staff Side have asked the employers, in principle, for agreement for 'payment on account'. This would mean in effect that these people also will receive the 2.5 per cent increase from 1 April and not have to wait for assimilation to be completed.

The Department of Health has already indicated that cash allowances under Whitley will be increased in line with this award for those not yet assimilated. However, this is also yet to be confirmed. How this relates to salary led allowances (non cash elements of on call/standby which are still under protection), is expected to continue to be resolved at local level pending the completion of out of hours work in the AfC agreement.

Amongst those also affected by the pay award recommendations are consultant doctors, who will receive the lowest rise of just 1 per cent in April, increasing to 1.2 per cent in November. The British Medical Association said it was astonished at the “vindictive and petty treatment of consultants.” Dr Paul Miller, chairman of the BMA consultants’ committee said: “This will do very little to relieve NHS debt but will damage doctors’ goodwill enormously.”
