Technology breakdown

Scan in progressMore than 80 cancer patients had radiotherapy delayed after a computer virus infected two linear accelerators at Poole Hospital in Dorset.

The hospital set up weekend clinics to ensure the patients still received treatment within the required  ‘seven day window’ and say that the situation has now been resolved.

Patricia Nicholas of the Department of Health was confident this was an isolated incident: “Every NHS trust has a minimum of one firewall to prevent viruses getting through and the national programme NHS Connecting for Health provides clear guidance for trusts on securing networks,” she said. “We have all the appropriate systems in place.”
