Where’s the dosh gone?
The King’s Fund has urged the government to consider value-for-money before committing to increasing health service investment. In a report called ‘Spending on healthcare – How much is enough?’ the authors acknowledge that the government
has injected large increases of funding into the NHS with the intention of bringing health
spending up to the European average.
It is possible that 2026 the UK could be spending one pound of every five in the economy on health care. Stretching the projection still further, in 40 years’ time half of the nation’s wealth would be spent on health care. But at the relatively high current levels of spending, the rate of increase in health benefits are likely to become increasingly slight. Is the taxpayer going to see a fair return on the investment? When will ‘enough be enough’? Can a limit on health spending be defined? If so, how?
