Do you know anyone who’d be a benevolent fund trustee?

Benevolent Fund logoThe trustees of the SoR’s Benevolent Fund are looking for two new members to join their ranks. Chairman Margaret McClellan, who is shortly to retire from her post, said that applications are welcomed from all areas of the profession, including retired radiographers. “We want to ensure that the board has a good mix,” she explained.

There are a number of personal qualities required. “You and the other trustees are responsible for the safe and sensible management of the Fund,” said Margaret. “This involves thinking of new ways to improve income. You also need experience working with a committee and of being responsible for money that is not yours.”

As a trustee you will be expected to help make decisions on whether an award should be made and, if so, how much money should be offered. “Each award must be looked at individually, with sensitivity and in complete confidence,” Margaret explained.

There is a time commitment involved. “You will need to attend two meetings each year in London,” she said. “Trustees also occasionally attend conferences and meetings in order to publicise the work of the Fund.”

The remainder of the work is done at home. “Papers are sent to you marked 'confidential' and you send your decision to the chair within a few weeks,” said Margaret.

In conclusion, she urged members to consider applying for the post of trustee. “It is an excellent opportunity to serve fellow members who are in difficulties through no fault of their own; I have got so much out of my time on the board.”
