Radiographers ‘bogged down’ at work

X-Ray signMore than half of UK radiographers feel they are not reaching their full potential. This is according to a survey of 600 senior radiographers and sonographers, conducted by agency Sonographers Medical between October 2004 and December 2005.

“One of the common themes was being too ‘bogged down’ with the day-to-day workload to develop further,” said Zaffar Ahmed, director of Sonographers Medical.

Sixty per cent felt that being in control of their work-life balance would improve their productivity, with two-thirds admitting they would be more inclined to apply for a job with an employer who provided flexible working opportunities. Over eight out of 10 said that they would be more committed to a department or trust that helped them realise their full potential.

The survey also highlighted the importance of positive communication, with nearly three quarters of radiographers stating that regular praise from their manager motivates them more than anything else.

“Seventy per cent also considered that being asked for their opinion and having a sense of what is going on in the department helps to create a motivated team,” said Zaffar.
