CPD and Health Professions Council Registration
Many managers and practitioners will be surprised to note that the Health Professions Council makes no reference to CPD in its current renewal of registration forms.
Section 7 of the accompanying guidance booklet sets this out explicitly: “Your CPD activities are not currently linked to the renewal of your registration with us. We consulted in 2004 on linking CPD to re-registration and we are producing more guidance on how this will work in the future.”
SoR CPD Officer, Sean Kelly, commented: “It’s not unexpected that the link between CPD and registration would not be made this time round. Although the CPD consultation paper was sent to registrants in the autumn of 2004 and the HPC’s response document ‘Continuing Professional Development – Key Decisions’ was published a year later, the Council was clearly concerned that full and proper guidance should be available to registrants so that they plan and record their CPD confident of meeting the HPC’s CPD Standards.”
He continued, “The HPC is making every effort to involve the professional bodies in the development of such guidance. Together with representatives from the other professional bodies I will be meeting with the HPC’s CPD Professional Liaison group on 3 February to start this process. SoR is keen to see the development of an electronic template that would be compatible with ‘CPD Now’. This would enable members to use the material they already have in their portfolio to put together the evidence needed by the HPC if they are sampled as part of the CPD audit process.”
The HPC has indicated that first audit of the CPD process will take place in 2008. The professions for audit in the initial round will be ODPs and chiropodists/podiatrists.
